OPT

What is Optional Practical Training (OPT)?

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a program that allows international students in the United States on an F-1 visa to work in their field of study for up to 12 months after completing their academic program. Here are some key points about F-1 OPT:

  1. Eligibility:
    • You must have been enrolled in a full-time degree program for at least nine months before becoming eligible for OPT.
    • You can apply for OPT before or after completing your degree, but the work must be directly related to your major field of study.
  2. Duration:
    • You can engage in OPT for a total of 12 months.
    • If you have a degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field, you may be eligible for a 24-month extension, bringing the total OPT period to 36 months.
  3. Application Process:
    • You must apply for OPT through the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
    • It’s recommended to apply for OPT 90 days before or up to 60 days after your program end date.
  4. Employment Authorization Document (EAD):
    • Once approved, you will receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card. You cannot begin working until you have received this card and the start date on it has been reached.
  5. Job Requirements:
    • The work undertaken during OPT must be directly related to your major area of study.
    • You can work for multiple employers, change employers, or work as a self-employed business owner during OPT.
  6. Traveling on OPT:
    • Traveling outside the U.S. during OPT requires careful consideration. It’s important to have the required documentation, including a valid EAD card, a job offer letter, and a valid passport.
  7. STEM OPT Extension:
    • If you have a STEM degree, you may be eligible for a 24-month extension. This requires you to work for an employer enrolled in the E-Verify program and to submit a STEM OPT extension application.

It’s crucial to consult with your Designated School Official (DSO) and review the official USCIS guidelines to ensure compliance with OPT regulations. Keep in mind that immigration policies can change, so staying informed about the latest updates is essential.
