What is an F-2 Dependent Visa?

The F-2 visa is designed for the dependents of F1 visa holders, allowing them to accompany or join their spouse or parent in the United States while they pursue their academic studies. Eligibility:

Dependents: The F-2 visa is available for the immediate family members of F-1 visa holders, including spouses and unmarried children under 21 years old.

No Employment: F-2 visa holders are generally not allowed to work in the United States.

Travel: F-2 visa holders may travel in and out of the U.S. as long as their F-1 visa holder maintains their status.

How to apply for an F2 Visa

Application Process:

Form DS-160: Complete the online nonimmigrant visa application form DS-160.

Visa Fee: Pay the non-refundable visa application fee.

SEVIS Fee:  No SEVIS fee is required for F2 visas.

Schedule an Interview: Visit the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website in your home country to schedule a visa interview appointment.

Interview: Attend the visa interview with the required documents, including:

      • Valid passport
      • Form DS-160 confirmation page
      • Visa application fee receipt
      • F1 SEVIS fee receipt
      • Passport-sized photo
      • Proof of relationship with the F-1 visa holder (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.)
      • F-1 visa holder’s I-20 form
      • F2 visa applicant’s I-20
      • Evidence of financial support
      • Any other supporting documents requested by the Consular Officer

Visa Approval:

If approved, you will receive a visa stamp on your passport. Make sure to understand the visa validity period and maintain your F-2 status during your stay in the U.S.

Important Notes:

    • F-2 visa holders must maintain their status by complying with U.S. immigration regulations.
    • F-2 visa holders may not engage in full-time academic study or employment.
    • F-2 visa holders may leave the U.S. at any time but must ensure their visa is still valid for re-entry.
